Welcome to the education blog from SHAPES. We'll be looking at all things schools – from news to classroom resources and curriculum changes, to what teachers want and how you can help provide it.

SHAPES wins an Education Resources Award (ERA) 2018

On Friday 16th March at the National Conference Centre in Birmingham, we won an Education Resources Award (ERA) for our work on Sir Chris Hoy's Flying Fergus Summer Challenge – in partnership with his publisher, Piccadilly Press.

The Award: Free Educational Resources of the Year

Winning the award is special to us for a few reasons:

1. We know that schools and teachers are fighting against tight budgets at the moment, so it's important to us to offer quality, fresh and engaging free resources that everyone can use.

2. We're a young business, we've been going for just under a year, so to win an award at this stage is a huge deal for us!

3. The other finalists in our category were absolutely brilliant:

BBC Terrific Scientific

Stranger Sagas

National Geographic Kids Primary Resources

Premier League Primary Stars

National Theatre: On Demand in Schools

HMRC: Junior Tax Facts

Betty for Schools

LGfL Child Bereavement UK

Scholastic Reading Audit

The Flying Fergus Summer Challenge

The judges described The Flying Fergus Summer Challenge as "an innovative programme combining reading with physical exercise."

The aim of the challenge was to keep children exercising while also engaging with literacy objectives over the summer holidays. It was backed up by research from The British Journal of Sports Medicine, which found that children stop exercising from as young as seven years old. Not only did we write resource packs for teachers in order to support the challenge, but for parents and children too – you can read more about it all here.

Thank you to the ERA organisers and sponsors for a great night – we won't forget it.
